Sewage Backup Cleanup in Boca Raton, FL
Sewage is the one kind of water you should never clean up yourself. It carries bacteria and viruses, it soaks into anything porous, and household cleaners don’t make those materials safe again. Aqua Revive’s sewage cleanup in Boca Raton treats every backup and waste-contaminated overflow as Category 3 water: protective gear, controlled removal, disinfection and documented drying. The aim is a home that’s genuinely clean, not just one that looks dry.

First: Keep Everyone Safe
Don’t flush, run taps, showers, the dishwasher or the washer. Every gallon you send down the drain can come back up.
Switch off power to the area at the breaker if water is near outlets, and only if you can reach the panel without walking through the water.
Don’t use a household vacuum, a mop you plan to keep, or fans. They spread contamination.
If you touched the water, wash with soap and clean water right away.
Photograph everything from a safe distance, and call us and your insurer.
What Causes Sewage Backups in Boca Raton
Aging cast-iron drain lines
Homes from the 1950s to the late 1970s, common in Central and East Boca, often still have cast-iron drains under the slab. Corrosion and scale narrow them until wastewater backs up into the lowest fixture, usually a shower or a ground-floor toilet.
Blockages
Grease, wipes and roots in older clay or cast-iron laterals.
Heavy rain
Intense storms like the October 26, 2025 cloudburst, when parts of the city got up to nine inches of rain in two hours, can overwhelm drainage around low-lying homes.
Condo stacks
In towers, a blockage in a shared drain stack can push waste out at the lowest connected units. In a tower or a villa building, building management needs to know right away.
Toilet overflows
An overflow with waste in it is Category 3, even if it’s “just” one bathroom. If it went through the floor to the unit below, both units need the same treatment.
How We Clean Up Sewage Safely
We follow the IICRC S500 standard for Category 3 water. It’s built around removing contamination, not covering it up.
-
Stop the source and secure the area
We confirm the backup has stopped, or call a licensed plumber to clear the line, and set up containment so contamination doesn’t travel through the house.
-
Protective equipment
Technicians wear respirators, waterproof suits, boots and gloves.
-
Remove the water and solids
Extraction equipment and pumps remove the contaminated water. Solids go out in sealed containers.
-
Remove porous materials
Under the S500, porous materials soaked by Category 3 water, such as carpet and pad, drywall up to a flood cut above the wet line, insulation, upholstered furniture and mattresses, are generally removed and disposed of, not cleaned.
-
Clean and disinfect
Hard, non-porous surfaces like tile, concrete, framing, metal and sealed wood are cleaned, then treated with an EPA-registered antimicrobial.
-
Dry
Commercial dehumidifiers and air movers dry the structure, with daily readings in your drying log.
-
Verify
We check the area before reconstruction. When the job calls for it, independent testing confirms the area is clean.
What can be saved after a sewage backup?
Hard, non-porous items usually can: tile, metal, glass, ceramic, sealed solid wood, and most hard furniture after proper cleaning. Carpet, pad, mattresses, upholstered furniture, pillows, stuffed toys, cardboard, paper and anything soaked through usually can’t be made safe and is discarded. Sentimental items are worth asking about; some can be specialist-cleaned.
Is gray water from my washing machine the same as sewage?
No. Washer and dishwasher discharge is Category 2 (gray water): contaminated, but not to the same level. Gray water left sitting for a day or two in a warm house can degrade toward Category 3, though, so it still needs prompt, professional handling.
What Sewage Cleanup Costs
Sewage jobs cost more per square foot than clean-water jobs. They take more removal, protective equipment, containment, disposal and disinfection, and often a plumber’s bill on top. You get a written, itemized estimate that separates the emergency work from the rebuild.
Insurance and Sewage Backups
Check for a water backup endorsement. Many standard homeowners policies exclude water that backs up through sewers or drains unless you’ve added sewer or drain backup coverage. Look for it on your declarations page.
Sudden overflow vs backup. A toilet supply line that bursts is usually treated differently from waste backing up from the sewer. Describe what happened accurately and let the policy decide.
Condo owners: if a shared stack caused it, the association and its insurer may be involved. Notify management in writing.
Keep evidence. Photos, the plumber’s report on the cause, and our removal list with reasons.

How to Prevent the Next Backup
Don’t flush wipes (even ones labeled “flushable”), grease or paper towels.
If your home is older, ask a licensed plumber to camera-inspect the drain line. Scale and cracks in cast iron show up on video.
Ask your plumber whether a backwater valve makes sense for your home’s drain layout.
Condo boards: schedule stack cleaning and tell residents what not to flush.

Sewage Cleanup FAQs
Is it safe to stay in my home after a sewage backup?
It depends on where it happened and how big it is. A contained backup in one bathroom, sealed off from the rest of the home, often lets you stay. If sewage reached living areas or the kitchen, or anyone in the household is vulnerable, staying elsewhere until decontamination is done is usually wiser.
Can I clean up sewage myself?
We don’t recommend it. Sewage contains bacteria and viruses, porous materials it touched usually have to be removed, and household cleaners can’t make soaked drywall or carpet safe. Without protective gear and containment, you also risk spreading it to clean parts of the house.
Do you have to remove my drywall?
Usually, yes, where sewage touched it. Drywall is porous, so the standard approach is a flood cut, removing the lower section above the wet line. Then the wall cavity is cleaned, treated and dried before new drywall goes in.
How long does sewage cleanup take?
The removal and disinfection phase often takes a day or two for a contained area. Drying adds several more days. Rebuilding follows once the area is verified clean and dry. Larger or multi-unit losses take longer.
Does homeowners insurance cover sewage backup in Florida?
Often only if you added sewer or drain backup coverage. Many standard policies exclude it otherwise. A burst toilet supply line may be treated differently from a sewer backup. Check your declarations page or ask your agent.
What smell is normal after cleanup?
A faint smell of cleaning solution for a day or two is normal. A lingering sewage odor isn’t. It usually means contamination remains in a wall cavity, under flooring or in a drain. Call us back and we’ll find it.
